In this chapter, we will look at the life story of a shirt that you find in the market. Cultivation of cotton is very expensive and a difficult task. A small farmer grows cotton on his little piece of land. These are taken to the local trader as the farmer had borrowed money from the trader to buy seeds, fertilisers, etc. Once the reaping is done, cotton balls are gathered. These are taken to the neighbourhood merchant as the farmer had obtained cash from him to purchase seeds, manures, and so forth for farming. Even the market cost is high, and the merchant gets it at a meagre cost from the farmer. There is a bi-weekly market in Erode, Tamil Nadu that is one of the biggest markets for cloth in the world.
